Withy Brakers

Working family group stripping willow - withies. This was a very common occupation in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries, with families all taking part to boost their income. Older residents remember stripping withies by hand as children, using a withy brake, which is the upright wooden structure in the front of the photo, either before school, or on return from school. This photo is from around 1910.
