Photos by Mary Godlonton - Notes from Simon Porter

"This was was taken outside the village shop in East Lambrook in 1960 ish. From left to right we have Edith Savidge, who lived next door to us. Her husband was a semi-retired butcher, called Hedley when Edith was in a good mood and a damn fool when not. Next is Margaret Birchenough who kept the shop. Her husband Bill was a celebrated cheese maker working for Warren's farms in their early days, and the shop sold the best cheese for miles around. You can work out for yourself who is the one in the short trousers in the middle, Simon Porter, and behind him is Bet Cox ( nee Fowler ). On the right is Ida Best who lived at the bottom of the village at the end of Water Street in the cottage before you get to what is now Jonathan Male's house. She never married, but her father was a bricklayer for William Yandle and helped build many houses in the district, including, so I'm told, our own in East Lambrook"
